How Long Does Electroforming Take? (All You Need to Know)
How Long Does Electroforming Take?
The process of electroforming can be a daunting task for many hobbyists, it can be time-consuming and frustrating at times, but the results always make it worthwhile!
In this article, we’ll discuss what electroforming is like as a hobby, and we’ll answer questions like, how long does electroforming take, along with many others!
How Long Does Electroforming Take?
The answer to this question is dependant on the size, and difficulty of your project, electroforming can be quite a time-consuming process.
Along with the setup and preparations required you can be looking at 24h to multiple days, but the results will be more than worth it!
In this article, we’ll go through the different emotional aspects that go with the electroforming hobby, and we’ll be taking you along the emotional rollercoaster ride associated with learning a new hobby!
By the end of this article you’ll know exactly if electroforming is the right hobby for you, let’s jump right into it!
What Is Electroforming?
Before we can dive into the intricate details of the hobby, we should first take a step back and look at the bigger picture, what even is electroforming?
Electroforming is the way to give regular non-metallic objects a metal shell, therefore enhancing their look, and preserving them forever and ever!
The term electroforming can seem daunting, and it can scare a lot of beginners in the hobby away.
Once you’ve done some research you’ll realize that electroforming is as simple as attaching wires to your object back to your power supply, and a similar wire from the power supply to a piece of metal, a little tweaking, and there you go, you’re now electroforming! Of course, there’s more to it than that, but nothing to be scared of!
You can’t blame them, there’s a lot of impressive equipment involved, most of which is unfamiliar to the average person, on top of that we’re working with electricity as well, there’s enough to be scared of at first sight, but when you look closer these seemingly big obstacles disappear like snow to the sun!

Is It Time Consuming?
Now that we know the basics of electroforming, it’s time to dive into the intricate details of the hobby, and we’ll start with an important part for any part-time hobbyist, how time-consuming is electroforming?
For those of you that can’t allocate their full schedule to electroforming, like most of us, it’s important to know how much time you’ll have to put into it!
Learning how to electroform can be done at your own pace, but it takes quite some time, effort, and discipline to learn.
You’ll need to invest time into the different aspects of electroforming, such as learning how to use the equipment and go through the many preparation steps such as sealing and conductive painting.
You can buy a pre-assembled electroforming kit to save you some time and money to get into the hobby.
As we’ve mentioned previously, the entire electroforming process from sealing to protecting can take anywhere from one to multiple days, depending on your experience and project size.
It’s important to note, however, that the entire learning process associated with electroforming is fun, and you’ll hit many milestones if you keep your persistence through the frustrating parts!
Does Electroforming Require Concentration?
As with any hobby, electroforming requires a certain amount of concentration.
This is especially true when you’re working with some of the more hazardous materials involved with electroforming such as the solution, so yes, a certain degree of concentration is required, especially when you’re still in the learning process!
Once you get a little more experienced, however, most of the steps like sealing and conductive painting will go almost on autopilot.
As with any hobby, the process gets easier and more relaxing as time goes on, so electroforming will require less concentration as you get more experienced!
Obviously, it’s always recommended to keep a certain amount of concentration when on the job, as you’re working with electricity and potentially dangerous chemicals!
Is Electroforming Worth The Effort?
We might be slightly biased in this section, but yes of course electroforming is worth the effort!
The process of creating a metal object from a non-metal base never gets old, and the results are guaranteed to blow your mind, no matter how experienced you get!
Electroforming also allows for many different experiments in terms of art, and settings that you can tweak.
Therefore, electroforming will never get boring, and it’ll always be worth the effort as you can create an endless possibility of objects, both decorative and practical! It’s this sheer amount of opportunity that makes our art so beautiful!
Is Electroforming Frustrating?
As with every learning process, trying to master the art of electroforming can be frustrating sometimes, when the results don’t quite end up as you wanted for example.
Electroforming requires you to redo the entire process, and troubleshoot every single aspect to see where the fault lies, this process can be rather frustrating sometimes, but these are consequences for any learning process!
All of these frustrations disappear like a heartbeat when the process is successful, all it takes is a couple of satisfactory results and you won’t even know why you were frustrated in the first place!
Therefore, the more experienced you get, the less frustrating it gets! The fact that there are frustrations involved only makes the successful moment all the sweeter!
Is Electroforming Fun?
I mean come on, is this even a question?
Yes, of course, electroforming is fun!
The rush of accomplishment that fills your body when all the hard work pays off is something you just have to experience to understand it! In a hobby as complex as electroforming, your persistence will eventually be rewarded with incredible joy and pride, as you start to see that hard work and the hours you put in are converting into incredible results!
Does Electroforming Take Practice?
Electroforming takes practice to provide consistent results, you can, by pure luck, get your first electroforming project just right, but this is by no means a guarantee for future projects!
It takes practice and experience to get your setup just right for every individual situation. So, the answer would be yes and no, as you can get it perfect without practice, but you won’t get it consistently perfect!
An Overview Of The Many Steps It Takes Before You Can Even Start The Process
As we’ve outlined in previous parts of this article, electroforming takes a tremendous amount of preparation before you’re even able to turn on your power supply and get to the exciting part.
Therefore, persistence is key, as you won’t be rewarded for all your initial prep work, but it’ll be more than worth it in the end! Let’s have a look at just how much it takes to prep your objects!
First off we have to clean our entire object and rid it of any dirt and organic oils, after that we have to apply multiple coats of sealant to protect our material and to keep it from dissolving in the electroforming solution.
We then have to attach a bail ring to the object to hold it in place, and we need to apply multiple layers of conductive paint to the object to allow electricity to pass through it.
We then need to run wire through the bail ring and place our object into the bath. After that we need to set up our wires, apply the correct rectifier settings, and now we’re ready to go.
That’s a lot of work, and technically speaking we haven’t even started electroforming yet! Remember though, all the work will be worth it in the end!
